Multiyear ARM Field Campaign Southeast US
26 January 2026 | ZEROGeoengineering.com | Example of federal organizing and deployment of atmospheric “research” experiments. Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) experimentation efforts are supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science, Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER). The five-year research project (2024-2029) is located in Bankhead National Forest (BNF) in northwestern Alabama. The project focus involves aerosol-cloud interactions and is being led by Brookhaven National Laboratory of New York. Instrumentation for the experiments includes but is not limited to, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), ground-based radar, Doppler lidar, 140-foot walk-up scaffold tower — as well as two supplemental tower sites.
“In October 2024, ARM began operating the Bankhead National Forest (BNF) atmospheric observatory in northwestern Alabama. The BNF is currently expected to be operational for five years. A multi-institutional site science team led by Brookhaven National Laboratory developed the BNF science plan, which focuses on improving process understanding and model representations of aerosols, clouds, and land-atmosphere interactions, together with key cross-coupling of those areas to explore land-atmosphere feedbacks and aerosol-cloud interactions.” Source
