Funding of solar geoengineering, 2020–2025
14 April 2026 | ZEROGeoengineering.com | Report below published by The Heinrich Böll Foundation found funding for solar geoengineering increased dramatically from 2020-2025. Authors show financial investment is mainly coming from entities in the technology and finance sectors, along with billionaire philanthropists: “Of the 33 philanthropy or investment capital funders, more than half got their capital from Silicon Valley and other high-tech firms or startups.”

During the period 2020–2025 philanthropic giving and government funding were the primary sources of solar geoengineering funding.

The majority of funding for solar geoengineering comes from the US and UK, and nearly two thirds of recipients of that funding were also based in the US or in Europe.

Actual total funding might hence be many times higher than the sum of the amounts reported here.

ARIA has since granted over $56 million across twenty-two research grants

NOAA has contributed close to $4 million in grant funding for five research grants that comprise nine payments to eight US-based research organizations

General support funders

Figure 8 shows the complex nature of the network of general support funders and recipients. Unlike in Figure 5, here multiple organizations fund several organizations, and several organizations receive general funding from multiple organizations.
