Aerosol as a Tool for Weather Prediction
29 August 2026 | ZEROGeoengineering.com | Aerosol dispersion within the context of weather research and forecasting involves multi-platform, multi-sensor infrastructures including: research aircraft, satellites, ground-based radar networks (NEXRAD), telecommunication/wireless sensor networks, as well as integrated data assimilation and computation that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems.
The 2015 study below, “Investigation of Aerosol Effects on Weather Forecast using NCEP Global Forecast System,” was a collaboration between National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s (NOAA) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), State University of New York at Albany (SUNYA), National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), and Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR).
The project determined that including aerosols in predictive modeling systems “improves weather forecasts and climate predictions by taking into account of aerosol effects on radiation and clouds.”

2019 The Weather Research and Forecasting Model with Aerosol–Cloud Interactions (WRF-ACI): Development, Evaluation, and Initial Application:
“The Weather Research and Forecasting Model with Aerosol–Cloud Interactions (WRF-ACI) is developed for studying aerosol effects on gridscale and subgrid-scale clouds using common aerosol activation and ice nucleation formulations and double-moment cloud microphysics in a scale-aware subgrid-scale parameterization scheme.”

2022 NOAA State of the Science Fact Sheet:
“Aerosols are also the component of air pollution most responsible for disease and death both with in the United States and abroad.”
“NOAA engages in large field studies with aircraft, ships, and ground-based observations to measure aerosol amounts and properties and how they vary with meteorology and source. To this end NOAA also develops and uses state-of-the-art instruments and works with national and international agencies to improve the accuracy and reliability of aerosol measurements.”
