2026 GAO Solar Geoengineering Report
12 April 2026 | ZEROGeoengineering.com | The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) Science and Tech Spotlight on Solar Geoengineering acknowledges the lack of governance, negative public opinion, and the potentially harmful effects of solar geoengineering on human health and the environment. Nevertheless more “research” and field testing are recommended. This same policy has continued for decades – see the related materials at the end of this post.
“Solar geoengineering seeks to cool Earth’s temperature by reflecting incoming sunlight back into space, but effects on the environment and public health are uncertain. Several private companies are beginning to develop and use these methods, raising concerns about the lack of oversight.”
“Lack of governance. There is no international consensus on how to regulate use of or coordinate research on solar
geoengineering. In the U.S., several statutes apply to solar geoengineering, but federal oversight is limited. Some U.S. states, however, have already enacted bans on solar geoengineering activities, and how intrastate effects would be addressed is unclear. “
