Military Chaff Contains PFAS
August 18, 2024 | ZeroGeoengineering.com | Worldwide efforts are underway to ban Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), known also as “forever chemicals.”
From the Clean Water Action factsheet, PFAS are defined as a class of human-made chemicals that are incredibly persistent in the environment and also highly toxic. PFAS exposure has been linked to neurological problems, kidney disease, decreased fertility, liver damage, thyroid disease, compromised immunity, cancer, asthma and respiratory complications.
Environmental degradation resulting from PFAS chemicals include soil contamination, air pollution, water pollution, damage to plants, animals, wildlife, and ecosystems.
PFAS are widely used in consumer products such as food packaging, adhesives and cleaning products. Industrial products that contain PFAS include paints, stain-and water-resistant fabrics, carpeting, fire-fighting foams (AFFF), and military chaff.
The 2023 Department of Defense (DOD) document, “Report on Critical Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Uses,” confirms that PFAS are an ingredient in chaff, which is listed in the report as a Kinetic (action involving active warfare) Capability.
“Currently, non-PFAS alternatives do not exist for most of these applications, and the likelihood of developing alternatives for these uses is estimated to range from moderate to almost impossible.”

Chaff consists of aluminum-coated glass fibers ranging in lengths from 0.8 to 0.75 cm and is released in packets of 0.5 to 100 million fibers.
According to the 1998 Government Accounting Office (GAO) report below, “DOD Management Issues Related to Chaff,” previous studies had not addressed “the possible formation of inhalable particulates or issues related to compliance with the Clean Air Act.”
Quote from report above: “Air quality issues addressed in the report include the potential for (1) noncompliance with national air quality standards due to the release of significant quantities of particulates, (2) release of hazardous air pollutant emissions, and (3) visibility impairment…” p.6
