AI-informed cloud seeding guidance
April 17, 2024 | ZeroGeoengineering.com | UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) funds international collaboration in rainfall enhancement experimentation. The Nature article below highlights funded projects which include researchers in China, Finland, Germany, Japan, Russia, UAE, UK and the U.S..

According to the article:
“A total of 11 projects have been awarded to date, targeting multiscale processes, including land-atmosphere feedbacks, bio-geo-engineering, aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions, and mixed-phase cloud microphysics. The interdisciplinary nature of these projects leverages the latest advancements in material science and nanotechnology for the development of novel seeding materials17, autonomous unmanned aerial systems18 (UAS) for more robust and cost-effective seeding missions, smart sensors for in-cloud electrification19, reverse-engineered thermal systems20 to stimulate artificial updrafts and convection, and machine learning tools21 for more efficient cloud forecasting and targeting systems. Figure 1 shows an infographic that consolidates the 11 projects funded by the UAEREP across 4 award cycles between 2016 and 2023.”

Man-made “weather” schemes have been underway for decades. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) adds to the hazard of interfering with nature.
S.3888, a “bill to mandate the use of artificial intelligence by Federal agencies to adapt to extreme weather, and for other purposes,” includes language acknowledging potential adverse outcomes from AI in weather activities. Relative to NEPA compliance issues the bill mentions the need for “best practices for minimizing the environmental impacts of the use of artificial intelligence technology…”
The national UAE cloud seeding program has been has operational for a decade. Some reports suggest the recent flooding episode in Dubai could have been made worse by ongoing cloud seeding activities.
