DARPA Coded Invisibility Smoke
February 26, 2023 | ZeroGeoengineering.com |An August 2022 Popular Mechanics article describes a tuneable smoke screen to make troops invisible: “Particulates seeded in the atmosphere would block an adversary’s vision while still allowing U.S. troops to see though.”
According to DARPA’s press release, The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is investigating a tuneable smokescreen to make troops invisible on the battlefield. Known as Coded Visibility, there are two approaches: passive and active asymmetry.
Passive asymmetry “will likely require multiple obscurant materials deployed in specific ways to allow one-way vision through the plume.” Obscurants could include smoke, a liquid aerosol spray, or could even mean something more exotic, like metamaterials—engineered composites designed to interact with electromagnetic radiation for certain purposes. In this case, a cloud of metamaterials could be used to block light or allow it to enter only from certain angles. Active asymmetry, on the other hand, will require “a single obscurant material, but one that can be tuned in real time” to let troops see through it.”
