“For centuries mankind has dreamed of changing the weather at will, to reverse drought, stave off destructive storms or to water crops. Climate change aside, most of those attempts have been little more than wishful thinking. But in the modern era, we’ve got the technology and now we believe its of no consequence to make the clouds do our bidding. No longer topic for conspiracy theorist, Idaho Power sent its customers a two page flyer on the weather modification program. The program has been in effect consistently since 2003. Its purpose isn’t to stay drought but to benefit its hydro-power operations. Touted as effective and safe, Idaho Power grew 40% the past several years.

Rather than try to alter natural weather patterns to create energy, the focus should be shifted to well-established alternatives like solar and wind power that do not require tampering with the environment’s natural cycles.

Just Because We CAN do it, should we?

KIVI TV explains the process of cloud seeding:

The process is known as cloud seeding and Idaho Power has placed 55 generators in remote areas of Idaho’s central mountains. They burn an acetone solution releasing tiny silver iodide particles that are carried into storm clouds by rising air currents.

“And this particle kind of floats around and it acts as a natural ice nuclei it basically teaches water how to freeze. By introducing more of these particles in the atmosphere you get more snowflakes,” explained Blestrud

But in order to get those tiny particles in just the right part of the cloud they also attack the storm from the air, operating three aircraft equipped with special flares mounted along the wings. The planes fly along designated courses in the selected basins just seeding as they go along.

How much extra water are we talking about? Well if you add all the water from Idaho Power’s cloud seeding efforts from across the entire state it’s enough to fill up Lucky Peak Reservoir, not once, but three times!

If cloud seeding is so effective, did it contribute to the 2016 winter ‘snow-pocalypse’ of record breaking snowfall around Treasure Valley? 
If it did, wouldn’t Idaho Power be liable for the damages to buildings and residences caused by excessive snowfall and for the lost wages of employees unable to get to work?

“The state is now subsidizing the project and water users in the Boise and Wood River basins as well as the Upper Snake have started contributing funding.” 

Silver Iodine is considered a toxin, but its safe to add to our precipitation?

Under the guidelines of the Clean Water Act by the EPA, silver iodide is considered a hazardous substance, a priority pollutant, and as a toxic pollutant.(10) The Office of Environment, Health and Safety, UC Berkeley, rates silver iodide as a Class C, non-soluble, inorganic, hazardous chemical that pollutes water and soil.(8) It has been found to be highly toxic to fish, livestock and humans.(6,7,8,9) Numerous medical articles demonstrate that humans absorb silver iodide through the lungs, nose, skin, and GI tract.(7,8,9) Mild toxicity can cause GI irritation, renal and pulmonary lesions, and mild argyria (blue or black discoloration of the skin). Severe toxicity can result in hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, shock, enlarged heart, severe argyria, and death by respiratory depression.(8)

Obviously the cloud-after-cloud, year-after-year use of cloud seeding could lead to an insidious, cumulative effect. Especially when the same area is repeatedly seeded. If the toxicity manifests in pollution and illnesses, the effects may not be reversible.

There is nothing to tell us how those chemicals accumulate in the environment. When we don’t know longer term impacts we have to take a precautionary approach, not just 10 years. We have to learn our lessons from the past, things like DDT, asbestos, CFCs, the impact of these chemicals accumulating became apparent decades after they started being used. -NSW Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi

If the public is to allow the spreading of this toxic material on an experimental basis, monitoring should be required and published to protect the public health and private lands. The cloud seeding program is designed with the use of public money over private land without voter approval or landowners permission.”
